Every character on your screen is stored as a number internally — ASCII for Latin letters and digits, UTF-8 for everything else. Binary representation shows you those numbers in their raw 0-and-1 form, useful for learning how computers represent text, for low-level debugging, for puzzle-style games, and for educational demonstrations of character encoding.
Type or paste text into the textarea and click. The tool converts each character to its numeric code via JavaScript's charCodeAt(), then formats each as a zero-padded 8-bit binary string, joined with spaces. The output is a long string of 0s, 1s and spaces representing your input.
Use it when learning how computers store text, when teaching character encoding to students, when generating decorative binary text for art or graphics, when puzzle-solving cryptography challenges, or when generating sample binary data for testing parsers.
For non-ASCII characters (emoji, Chinese, accented letters), each character may take 2–4 bytes in UTF-8 — but charCodeAt only returns the first 16-bit code unit, so multi-byte characters won't round-trip correctly. For full UTF-8 support use a TextEncoder-based tool.
Standard ASCII uses 7 bits, padded to 8 (one byte). UTF-8 uses 1–4 bytes per character; this tool shows the first byte's bits.
