GEO-IP databases map IP address ranges to physical locations and the ISPs that own them. While not pinpoint-accurate (city level is best, sometimes only region), it's good enough for fraud detection, country-based content rules, marketing analytics, server log analysis, and abuse investigation. ipapi.co is one of the major free public providers with permissive CORS support.

GEO-IP is approximate — VPN, proxy and mobile-carrier IPs often resolve to the carrier's data center, not the actual user. Country: 99%+ accurate. City: 70–80% accurate. Street-level: not possible — that's a privacy myth.
Many ISPs route traffic through regional gateways; the GEO-IP database may show the gateway location. VPNs deliberately mask your real location.
GEO-IP at country/city level is generally considered acceptable. Storing precise IPs requires legal basis under GDPR — handle with care.
