The other top-tier LLM. Claude 4 has a reputation for better long-form writing; its outputs feel less robotic, it's better at preserving voice, and it handles long context windows (200K tokens) without losing track of what was said earlier.

For long-form blog content, I default to Claude. For quick drafts, snippets, or list-format content, ChatGPT is faster.

A grammar and style checker

Either Grammarly Premium ($12/month) or LanguageTool (open-source, paid Premium $20/month). Both catch the typos AI tools introduce. Both flag stylistic issues. Both are dramatically better than running raw AI output without a check.

The free tier of LanguageTool actually does most of what most people need — its public API powers the grammar checker and proofreader tools on this site.

A keyword research tool

You still need real keyword data. AI tools confidently make up search volumes, difficulty scores, and trends. Don't trust them. Use Ahrefs (paid), Semrush (paid), Ubersuggest (limited free), or Google Keyword Planner (free, requires Google Ads account).

These tools won't write good content for you. They will tell you which keywords your draft is missing compared to existing top-ranking pages. Use them for the final optimisation pass, not for the first draft.

For visual content

  • Midjourney ($10+/month). Best image generation if you can describe what you want.
  • DALL-E 3; built into ChatGPT Plus. Less polished than Midjourney but quick.
  • Canva AI — image generation plus the rest of the Canva editor. Affordable, beginner-friendly.

For social-format quote cards, the text-to-image tool on this site renders typography over a coloured background — a quick fallback when you need a featured image and don't have time for Midjourney.

For voice consistency

  • Custom GPT in ChatGPT. Paste five examples of your past writing, ask GPT to extract your voice, and reuse the resulting GPT for future drafts. Big for solo writers maintaining a consistent voice.

Tools I've stopped using
